A few hours later, Kyle packed his duffle bag, suitcase, and laptop. From the den window, Jessie watched him load his car and debated whether to stop him. There was no retracting the awful things they’d said to one another so she let him go. No further words were exchanged between them. No goodbyes. No apologies. Just a silent tension between lovers, unsure what to say.

She hoped that she’d made it clear to him that, once again, he was being ridiculous about Terrence. More times than she could remember, she’d told him that she and Terrence had never been romantically involved. It was the truth. Even thinking of Terrence that way gave her the creeps.

When she was growing up, Terrence had been her teacher, and as an adult, he’d been her friend, part of her family. Plain and simple. Yet Kyle’s refusal to accept the truth had foolishly, and literally, driven them apart.

Upstairs in the bedroom, Kyle’s dresser drawers hung open and empty. Jessie ran her fingers through the lint that had accumulated during their four years together. Most of the time, it had been good, but the past few weeks had been jarring and surreal as though she’d been imprisoned inside someone else’s life.

Just as she’d suspected, Kyle had abandoned her. Seven months pregnant. Alone. No job. She was going to have to figure out what to do.

Her muscles ached with the stress and exhaustion. She needed time to think, but more urgently, she needed rest.
